Book Musings: A Saint and a Naturalist and God

Saint Patrick Book 2016

Saint Patrick

Wonderful story detailing how Saint Patrick followed what was in his heart. He stayed true to this even though it took him away from his family and he dearly missed them.

John Muir - America's Naturalist 2016

John Muir – America’s Naturalist

This book and how it brought forth the world and words of John Muir made my heart tingle. I would love to own this book! All three of us completely enjoyed this book and soaked it in.

from the flap: Muir recognized that wilderness should not only be appreciated but should be fought for as well. He sparked the preservation movement in the United States.

My favorite quotes:

“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” ~John Muir
“There is a love of wild Nature in everybody, an ancient mother love ever showing itself whether recognized or no, and however covered by cares and duties.” ~John Muir

“As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but Nature’s sources never fail. Like a generous host, she offers her brimming cup in endless variety, served in a grand hall, the sky its ceiling, the mountains its walls, decorated with glorious paintings and enlivened with bands of music ever playing.” ~John Muir

“Only by going alone in silence, without baggage, can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness. All other travel is mere dust and hotels and baggage and chatter.” ~John Muir

“When we are with Nature, we are awake, and we discover many interesting things and reach many a mark we are not aiming at.” ~John Muir

“Climb the mountains and get good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into the trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while care will drop off like autumn leaves.” ~John Muir

“Nature, like an enthusiastic gardner, could not resist the temptation to plant flowers everywhere.” ~John Muir

“We all travel the Milky Way together, trees and men.” ~John Muir

“The winds blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” ~John Muir

“Everything is hitched to everything else in the universe.” ~John Muir

“Go to Nature’s School – the one true university.” ~John Muir

What God Said Book 2016

What God Said

LOVED this book!!

“It happens to everyone. It is not a question of whether but of when. When this occurs, everything will change.

Your reason for being here will change, your reason for thinking, speaking, and doing will change, your countenance and appearance will change, your tone of voice will change, your clothing and eating habits will change, your work in the world will change, your friends will change, your purpose in life will change, your expression of life will change, your experience of life will change, and the world you touch will change.”

**THROWBACK MOVIE NIGHT – 2012**

The Parent Trap Movie 2012

My choice: The Parent Trap – Loved by all of us – lots of laughter!

Grave of the Fireflies Movie 1.15.17

Thomas’ choice: “Grave of the Fireflies”

Thomas says, “Not what I was expecting. It was sad.”

Lillian says, “Sad, yet had good parts and interesting songs.”

I say, “Quite emotional. A young boy trying his best to care for he and his younger sister. Causes one to think of and know what’s truly important in this life.”

Finding Forrester Movie 2017

Camilla’s choice – “Finding Forrester”

I say, “I love this story. ‘The first key to writing is just to write! Write from the heart. Review with the head.’ I love this story! Oh. Did I say, I love this story. I could have done with a lot less inappropriate language, yet, I understand it was representative of the characters.”

Thomas says, “Good movie. I liked it a lot. Funny in some parts, suspenseful, liked the characters. Really liked that Forrester wears his socks inside out due to the seams on the inside. I agree and wear my socks inside out. The people who make socks make them wrong.”

Lillian says, “Good, awesome, and my favorite part was near the end. I liked it!”

Camilla

Book Musings: Love and Rice and a Snail

a-course-of-love-book-2016

A Course of Love

This is my third time “reading” this book. It takes a LONG time as I only read a section or two every day …. in order to BE with what I’m reading.

Sort of a continuation of “The Course in Miracles” … The contents of this book are simply LOVE, JOY, and FREEDOM.

I would describe it as a guide book for the internal journey of coming to know oneself, freeing oneself from false walls one has built, and finally sharing the gifts and treasures within oneself with humanity …. with joy, peace, and love.

one-grain-of-rice-book-2016

One Grain of Rice

A mathematical folk tale about wisdom and fairness. A village girl in India teaches a raja what it truly means to be wise and fair. Reading this we learnt the surprising power of doubling one grain of rice every day for thirty days …. growing into more than one billion grains of rice.

We all LOVE books by DEMI. The illustrations are simply unmatched with content that’s bursting with wisdom!

legend-of-the-golden-snail-book-2016

The Legend of the Golden Snail

Amazing book about a young boy who travels to the Ends of the Earth ready to conquer! Along the way he discovers that what actually lies in his heart is kindness and compassion, rather than conquering, and he spreads it all along the way.

Absolutely LOVED this book! The illustrations are vibrant and captivating. Thomas and Lillian were glued to it right along with me!

Lillian says, “Good, my favorite part was the dog scene, and liked the plot.”

Thomas says, “I didn’t understand some of it, my favorite part was the ending, I like how few actors were in it, and I liked the original plot.”
(We talked about it afterwards and watched the interviews with producers and actors ….. and now Thomas understands.)

its-a-wonderful-life-movie-november-2016

Extra Team TLC movie night last night – My Choice: “It’s a Wonderful Life” ….

I say, “Absolutely adore this movie. It was Frank Capra’s favorite out of all he directed. One mans life touches the life of so many others. No man is born a failure. You are here for a reason.”

Lillian says, “Good, Christmasy, great, inspiring, heart warming, and my favorite parts are the dance in the gym and the end.”

Thomas says, “It was good. I like it every time we watch it. Inspiring and heart warming.”

Book Musings: Cats and Art and Barefoot

the-cats-in-krasinksi-square-book-2016

The Cats in Krasinski Square

Wonderful book about how cats outfoxed the Gestapo at the train station in Warsaw during World War II.

Love the Author’s Note and Historical Note concluding the book.

We all loved this book

art-from-her-heart-book-2016

Art From Her Heart

I loved this book, story and the self-taught artist it is about, Clementine Hunter. I’ve been wanting to take a painting class for years. I’d been waiting for the money to do this, the right materials, and the time.

About a month before we read this book, I let all that go. I began using what we had; the acrylic paint we had, the brushes we had, and using cardboard from food packages as canvas. I’m having the time of my life painting and playing around with the brushes and colors. Thomas and Lillian loved it too!

from the jacket cover: Clementine Hunter was a self-taught artist who captured scenes of the backbreaking work and joyous celebrations in southern farm life. Her work preserves a part of American history we rarely see, and the story of how she came to paint proves that art can help keep the spirit alive.

whole-body-barefoot-book

Whole Body Barefoot

Loved educating myself about how footwear choices are limiting the movement of our entire body. And how to make different choices.

I confess that I didn’t read every word in the book. Just pieces and sections that I felt moved to read.

Used birthday money back in February to order my first pair of barefoot, minimal shoes – custom made. It took me a while to figure out how to get the tying just right for me. Now that I’ve got it the way I want, I LOVE these shoes!
