Full of Imagination and Wonder – Where Would You Fly Review

Thank you to Helen for this beautiful review of Lillian’s book.

My review for Where Would You Fly? & Other Magical Stories by Lillian Darnell, 5/5 stars.

The first line of the blurb for this book reads:

Welcome to the radiant imagination of Lillian Darnell, a wonderful and unique human being, the kind who comes around only once in every 56,000 births, as she is missing the short arm of her 18th chromosome.

I thought it was the perfect introduction to my review. Her stories are full of imagination and wonder, as you see the world through her eyes from age 4 (written with a little help from her mum, Camilla) to age 16. Some are gentle guides to mindfulness, others to how to be happy, and most are delightful stories with fairies, unicorns, and magic.

I have to admit I found the Emotions and Feelings part particularly touching, where Lillian explores her own emotions while growing up. Her condition, and her journey which led to the publication of this book, are explained in the introduction by Camilla, who is also a wonderful poet, and a beautiful person. Her dedication to Lillian, and her son Thomas, is evident through the stories Lillian has written and the love she has for her family.

Every now and then it’s lovely to get away from the real world and travel to distant lands with mythical beings. Lillian’s book is a wonderful distraction that you can dip into every now and then, and it will put a smile on your face. Many thanks to Camilla, Lillian and Thomas for the chance to read Where Would You Fly?

Throwback Post: No One Made Her Angry But Herself

**THROWBACK POST**

May 2016

This one made my eyes sweat … Another of Lillian’s fairy tale emotion stories. The morning before she wrote this one, I was in a grumpy mood. Many times she will hook into this and catch a ride on the grumpy wave.

She was yelling at Thomas telling him that they had made me angry. I explained to her that no one made me angry except for myself with my own thoughts.

And then later in the afternoon, I read this story she wrote. As with many fiction stories that are sparked by the author’s reality, Lillian’s have a thread of her own reality running through each one. It warms my heart and causes my eyes to sweat …

I’m thinking that the series that she’s writing will be that book I mentioned she and I would write. I’m thinking Mr. Happy Tree will be the narrator (a fabulous tree that Lillian drew last spring or summer). **December 2020 Note: In fact, this story along with Lillian’s writings from age 5 – 16 years old are included in her debut book, Where Would You Fly and Other Magical Stories.**

Angry Candy Story

Once upon a time, there lived a red chewy candy who was always angry and her name was Angel. One day, Angel got angry for some unknown reason. Her candy buddies decided to investigate what could have made her angry but first, they had to look for some possible clues.

While they were investigating, Angel met with her candy friend, Sneaky Spice-Rika who was always acting innocent but Sneaky was hiding something from Angel. The investigators found strawberry flavored licorice, spices, and mint candy. So they went back to their club called Secret Detective Club to plan their next step of the mystery.

They put together a list of suspicious candy suspects with other candy suspects to talk to. The candy suspects’ were Sneaky Spice-Rika, Strawbella, and Sugarlicious.  They set out to talk to Sugarlicious first. “I did see something very unusual, odd, and peculiar this morning.” said Sugarlicious, “I saw Sneaky Spice-Rika near Angel”.  So the buddies said,”Thank you”! and moved on to talk to Strawbella but apparently she didn’t see anything strange.  Finally, they talked to Sneaky Spice-Rika and she said she was only near Angel to talk to her. So they went to Angel to get more facts and she said it was to comfort her. So the investigators went on to explain the whole story.

When Angel had heard the whole story, she chuckled and explained to them that no one had made her angry but herself. She also said that she had a bad argument with her candy parents, Coca and Choc. The investigators went back to everyone what they had learned. First, they stopped by Sugarlicious to tell her what she had thought was actually an act of kindness. Next, they stopped by Strawbella to tell her that Angel had been angry and she was made angry all on her own.

Lastly, they visited Sneaky Spice-Rika to apologize about suspecting her. The investigators thanked her for being such a great friend. Angel forgot about being angry and never got angry again. If you look closely, you can see Angel in any chewy red candy you or your friends eat.

I hope you enjoyed this story. Join us every Friday for the newest edition of Emotions With Animals!

These Were the Days – Eight Years in the Making

With Lillian turning 18 and the stressful move, I got behind on posting things here. For a while, you’ll be getting some older posts as I get caught up (this one from my birthday in February) … Much love!

February 22 2020:

8 years in the making …. Team TLC – Thomas, Lillian, Camilla … 3 family members …. 4 published books …. There are more to come. However, I need to take this year to press the reset button, for my physical health and for the emotional health of Thomas and Lillian. We’ve drifted from the Team in our Team TLC; which I know will happen as they get older. Yet, I’ve let vital areas slip by the wayside over the past 4 or 5 years, especially this last year.

One major struggle is about to end for us. Once that gift is showered upon us, the rebuilding of Team TLC begins. Of course it will look and feel different than when Thomas and Lillian were younger, and that’s the beauty of it, tempered with the longing of the way it used to be.

I get the feeling the next book will be authored by all three of us. We shall see. I never really know until I become focused on the book’s creation. xoxo

There were days
She could see no reason to continue

There were days
Shrouded in darkness and despair

There were days
Bubbling with joy and love

There were days
She knew the reason to continue

These were the days
The 18,250 days of riding the wheels of her life.

Thank you for being along for the ride. It’s a joy to share it with all of you. If you’d like to learn more about our books, go here … https://camilladowns.com/books/

Top 10 Inspiring Books of 2018

Another I thought it would do me good to review and to share with you too. I read many books, usually two or three at a time. This is a list of books I’ve read in 2018, that deeply touched me, or sparked a life shifting practice, or an “aha” moment.

whatever arises, LOVE that –

About once a year a book comes along for me that is an absolute game changer. This book is one of those.

No one suggested this book, I didn’t hear about it or see someone mention it online. I was at the library for our weekly volunteer work of pulling holds and shelving returns. I was shelving a return book when the word “LOVE” on the spine of this book caught my attention.

I pulled it from the shelf. Opened it to a “random” page and what I read was so meaningful I checked out the book.

Nearly all spiritual books I read contain the same message presented in different formats and from different perspectives. Which I LOVE. As sometimes it doesn’t resonate when presented at a particular time or in a particular way.

This is not one of those books (for me). It is a deeply energetically powerful book. It took me to the next level by guiding me in integrating what I have been experiencing and the path I have traveled the past three years.

In my own words, “Love the hurt, love the pain, love the unknown, love all of it until it is released, transmuted and the heart opens even further.”

Over the past 17 or so years I have been a heavy and frequent user of the phrase and similar phrases like, “Love is the Answer” and “All You Need is Love.” For me, this practice of loving whatever arises gives a new and different meaning to this. It’s the next level. It’s the game changer. I’m in.

“Love is the impulse to embrace the innocence of life that brings spiritual harmony to the forefront of your experiences. Whenever love is poured into your heart or sent out as blessings to others, the light within all things awakens.” – Matt Kahn

Rediscovering Life – Awaken to Reality –

Attachment, desire, happiness, and freedom …. It’s all revealed in this wonderful and powerful book! When I find a book that moves me, I read it about a half dozen times consecutively. On round three with this one. xoxo

The Right to Write –

This book and its powerful content was like a walk down a familiar, well-worn, and comforting path welcoming my writer’s soul home. LOVED every single bit of it. This is one I would love to own and have as part of my wee book collection.

Why should we write? For me, this is a powerful book. The author brought together so many of my own feelings and thoughts about writing, why I write, what happens when I write, and that EVERYONE should write.

One doesn’t have to share their writings. Simply the act of writing is healthy and therapeutic.

Cameron shares how writing can be playful, as well as a practical and profound experience. The art of writing will never be the same for you after reading this book.

A GREAT book for any of my writer friends!! And, pretty much anyone who wants to at least begin writing a daily journal for therapeutic reasons …. I’m serious! This is a powerful book!! I just want to hug and squeeze it! xoxo

Writing Down the Bones –

“The deepest secret in our heart of hearts is that we are writing because we love the world, and why not finally carry that secret out with our bodies into the living rooms and porches, backyards and grocery stores? Let the whole thing flower: the poem and the person writing the poem. And let us always be kind in this world.” – Natalie Goldberg

Another book I deeply loved. Enjoyed the energy of the book and would love to own this one! My reading preferences have shifted for the time being to that of books about writing, memoirs, and creative non-fiction interwoven with spirituality.

The first book that began this path was “The Right to Write” by Julia Cameron. The reading list for this topic is years long. That’s okay though as I plan on writing and reading for the rest of my days here …. xoxo

Your Life is a Book –

In the past I have stayed away from books like this, choosing instead to read deeply spiritual, mystical, and inner exploration type books. Recently, while pulling holds at the library, I was drawn to this book and others like it. Although I checked it out, the book sat for weeks while I read other books.

I’m grateful that there are times when I listen to the inner knowing and do things without question …and really, don’t even know that’s what I’m doing. HA! This book was exactly what I needed, when I needed it. And, surprisingly was also deeply spiritual. Imagine that!!

Silence –

I get incredibly much from all of Thich Nhat Hanh’s books. Of all I’ve read, they carry the similar thread of mindfulness and experiencing silence.

I really enjoy the stories he shares throughout this book and all of his books. Reading this now is what reminded me of the concept of mindful walking and breathing that he puts forth … taking one step for each in breath and one step for each out breath.

After being reminded of it in this book, I incorporated it into my walks.

Big Magic –

I read this when it was first published 3 years ago. Just read it again. Perfect timing as I read it at the same time as “Right to Write”.

If one is in the space for it, this is a powerful book. It held a completely different and more intense meaning this time around. Reading this inspired me to create a writing vow and a blog post titled “The Alchemy of Writing” …. xoxo

The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire –

This has been in my collection for years and I just now got around to reading it. It is crystal clear to me why I just now read this book. And is absolutely NO coincidence. And not a coincidence that it is about coincidences.

This one dives deeper into the coincidences we experience. The content is deeply aligned with my heart and I feel it to be quite powerful.

I haven’t had time to write a post about my 2018 main theme word and two supporting theme words. Yet, the main word is Jump (interchangeable with Leap) and the two supporting words are Listen and Trust. This book is full to the brim of the use of jump, leap, listen, and trust.

Here’s just one example, “These leaps of imagination are constantly evolving into what we see as the universe.” … Yes, Big Yes! I loved this one!! xoxo

What’s interesting for me is that when I’m reading his books, I “hear” the words spoken in his voice rather than mine. Almost like he’s reading to me! HA!

Peace to All Beings – Veggie Soup for the Chicken’s Soul –

I initially put this book on hold thinking it was an easy and short children’s book that we could read before bed. When it came in, I saw that’s not what it was at all. I asked Thomas if he wanted to read it. After looking at it, he left it on the kitchen table.

One day last week, I sat at the table and was moved to pick up the book, turn to a random page and read. I did not put the book down until I had nearly read to the end of the book (from where I had randomly opened it). After that, I began at the beginning of the book.

I am a vegetarian so obviously this book speaks to me. It wasn’t only that, though. It seemed to be speaking directly to other areas of my life as well. I’m not even sure how to describe this one. So, I will pull a quote or two from it with a few more of my own words added.

“Every thought is a prayer,
Therefore, let us
Think compassion
Think love
Think peace
For all beings everywhere.
Every act is a prayer.
Therefore, let us
Be compassion
Be love
Be peace
For all beings everywhere.”

This is a powerful book about peace, compassion, and reverence for life; with references to St. Francis, Jesus, Albert Schweitzer, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr, and many others of similar persuasion. The overall theme of the book is Ahimsa.

“Each object in the world is not merely itself, but involves every other object and, in fact, is everything else.” -Avatamsaka Sutra

The words and concepts in this book spoke to my soul so deeply and powerfully. To say I loved and enjoyed it is an understatement!

Beyond Civilization –

The foundation of this book is that there is no one right way to live. The author discusses how the majority of us are convinced that there must be only one right way to live, and we are living it.

I was deeply moved reading about how he defines civilization and tribes and taking a look into history at past civilizations and tribes. I’m inspired to learn about and see ideas from a different perspective. Great book!

Honorable Mention

What kind of Mom would I be if I didn’t mention my 17 year old daughter’s debut book??!!
